We opened Most Valuable Pets, Inc. on August 23, 1993. I had the dream of owning my own pet store since I was 15 years old. At age 12, I volunteered at a local veterinary hospital and by the age of 15, I was their veterinary assistant. At this time, I also began working at my first pet store. By the age of 17, I was the assistant manager of the pet store. At age 20, I moved to Atlanta and was the youngest sales representative ever at Southeast Pet Supply, which is the largest wholesale distributor in the south east. In Atlanta, I worked in and managed several pet stores ranging from single operations to four store chains. I graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Zoology. I bring to Most Valuable Pets a wealth of experience with animals and knowledge of their care. I met Vince at Animal World in Atlanta. We worked together at this four store chain. Vince has always shared my enthusiasm for animals and is a very business minded, practical person, with extensive pet store management experience in addition to a Business Management degree from Lexington Community College. Upon my graduation from Auburn we made a decision to return to my hometown, Lexington, and open a store - Most Valuable Pets. This name was selected because it also happened to be my initials - MVP. Vince and I work as a team managing and operating the store. Vince also owns, operates, and manages our Aquarium Maintenance Service. He has clients in many different industries including restaurants, doctors, lawyers, and private individuals who use his service. Vince and I were a perfect match and in January 1998, we married. We are the only Certified Companion Animal Specialists in the state of Kentucky. I was the first woman in the nation to complete all five certifications and Vince and I were the first to complete the sixth designation. The six certifications include: freshwater fish, canine, feline, avian, small animal, and reptile. We encourage education. Education is power and the key to success. In 1996, Most Valuable Pets was voted "Best Single Pet Store" in the country. We continue to play a vital role in the industry as well as our community. In 2008, we were named "Companion Animal Retailer of the Year" by Pet Product News, proving we are a leader in the industry in animal and customer care. We are often featured in many trade magazines and we support many local charities and groups. We recognize that we are in the pet business but we also say we are in the "people business." One key to our success is loyal customers. Our goal is to have Most Valuable Pets be an enjoyable place to work and for our customers to love to do business with us. -Melissa V. Poynter Whitton

We got our Goldendoodle puppy from MVP three weeks ago.  The owners of the store and staff were so helpful in not only telling me all about the breed but they also helped me in picking out all the accessories we would  need to bring him home.  I was delighted that our fee included puppy's first grooming as well as a coupon for neutering.  After picking out the puppy they took him and gave him a bath so he'd be fresh and fluffy for the trip to his new home.  I can not say enough good things about this store - what makes them unique is not only their service to the people and pets of Lexington but also their continued support in the community; as I have seen their sponsorship's in events all around town.  The store, and most of all the owners and employees, are a true asset to Lexington.  Thank you for our new puppy whom we adore!

The staff here are amazing, Hannah is our favorite but they are all wonderful. We buy our supplies here and spend a lot of time holding the birds which has encouraged us to purchase our own feathered friend. I think them allowing people to be hands on with the bird really helps people feel more comfortable with birds and lets them understand that birds can be affectionate. We brag about this store to everyone. Thank you MVP for being awesome.

Very courteous people. Good service and very informative. My mother in law's havanese and shih tzu look great after a day in the spa! Free pick up and delivery are really a plus. No doubt I will be a regular customer!

Katelynn is a phenomenal groomer here! I have a Persian cat who hates to groom himself, so I have him professionally groomed every 6-8 months. Katelynn sheered and shaped him up with a modified lion cut so he  is cut short on his body but blended and doesn't look goofy like other cat haircuts. On the way out I picked up an adorable harness for my dog that I hadn't seen anywhere else and some natural treats. Great selection of products and I'm very happy with the groom.

Great place. Beautiful inside. Pets are cared for and the open bird habitat is truly amazing and beautiful. This place came recommended by a co-worker of mine. Everyone there was friendly. We had a miscommunication about a return, when the OWNER went out of her way to call and speak to me and resolve the situation for me. It's clear the owners of this business are in this for providing great pets to great homes as well as providing excellent customer service.Very very impressed how they handled this situation and I will be recommending them to anyone who lives in the Lexington area.

I've used MVP for many years. I bought my Siamese cat there and have used their grooming service for our goldendoodle. Their staff is top notch and extremely helpful. But the main reason I'm writing this review is that I've recently started a saltwater reef tank. This hobby can be very frustrating. One mistake and you can kill all your fish. This is where a great pet store is vital. Vince and the staff are the best. He literally helped me over the phone numerous times. Give them a chance for any of your pet needs. You won't be disappointed.

I love this pet store. It is clean and they have high quality pets, fish and supplies. The young employees are well trained and knowledgeable. I love their bird corner with all the hand fed birds on perches. They have great cats and dogs from local breeders as well as reptiles, ferrets, bunnies, salt water fish, coral.... pretty much everything but snakes. I know that I am buying quality when I get pets or supplies there and I appreciate and like to support local family businesses. On any given day you can meet at least one or two people from the owner's family.  They have a passion for pets.

Professional and friendly staff. From the look of Buster, I can tell that the groomer took time and care when grooming my baby. A great value as compated to the franchise PetSmart. I high recommend.
