The George At Cley

THE GEORGE is an inn with history. A victim of the devastating floods of 1953, home to the inaugural meeting of the Norfolk Naturalist Trust and a focal point for bird watchers for many years thanks to its ‘bird bible’, it sits imposingly over the salt marshes looking out toward Blakeney Harbour. Here, tranquility is on the doorstep, thanks to the huge skies, acres of colourful salt-marsh and mile-upon-mile of un-spoilt beaches that are also a haven for wildlife. Here at Cley-next-the-Sea, with it’s narrow roads, no streetlights and a traditional red phone-box, you will find a beautiful, idyllic, north Norfolk brick and flint village that is bursting with character and filled with local culture. No wonder so many people are enchanted by this stretch of coastline. Dogs are welcome in the bar and front restaurant, we have a great kiddies menu and on the cold Autumn/ winter days we have a roaring open fire going to warm up the cockles of your heart.

Just back from a flying visit to Norfolk and a one night stay at The George. Was immediately offered a more convenient room when staff realised my husband was hobbling having broken his foot a few weeks previously - upgraded at no extra cost. Room had stunning views - spotless windows which is not always the case. Well proportioned and comfortable, en-suite perfect with plenty of hot water and fluffy white towels. No complaints and when we struggled with the blind the staff immediately came to our assistance ( amid much hilarity as it really was quite simple!) Evening menu was varied, reasonably priced and of excellent quality. I had the butternut squash, spinach and pea risotto which was scrumptious and my husband enjoyed a delicious steak. Breakfast equally superb with freshly smoked local fish and wide choice of fruit, cereal etc Staff were friendly, efficient and professional. Matthew in particular was a great host and conversation was easy and pleasurable. Great idea of lemon wedges served in individual squeezers and we were thrilled to purchase a pair to take home. Will be visiting again with our dog next time to enjoy the range of walks on the doorstep. For a down-to-earth but excellent hotel in superb location this would be hard to beat. Thank you for a great time. Wendy and Ron

We had a fabulous lunch with the best liver and bacon I've ever had. My husband's Sea Bass was also delicious. A warm welcome which included our spaniel. We will be back!

Just returned from a lovely 2 night break at The George. All staff were really pleasant and helpful. We stayed in room 4 which had a huge comfy bed and a fantastic view over the marshes. Breakfast on both mornings was delicious, particularly the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on a toasted muffin! The only disappointment was the afternoon tea.
